MY THOUGHTS - HENRIETTA
Yesterday This guy told me that I'm pretty for a dark skin girl. WTF does that mean?
- Is he trying to say that dark skin girls in general is not pretty?
This makes me sooooo upset, I have dealt with this dark skin and light skin thing all my life. My mom is light skin and my brother is too. When I was little I wanted to be lighter like my mom and brother. I notice that my brother would get most of the attention because of his skin. I finally got over that stage and I love the colour of my skin. I really believe that beauty comes from within, not the colour of your skin. I just wish people would understand that.
JUST EXPRESSING MY THOUGHTS

That comment disgusts me. I had a gorgeous friend in high school with the most beautiful dark complexion ever & guys would say that she was pretty for a dark skinned girl. I hate how the African American society & the media equates light skin &/or European features to beauty. The saddest thing about it is that that comment often comes from men that have a darker complexion. I see it as a manifestation of self-hatred. We have got to get out of this slave mentality! Not everything light, bright & damn near white is gorgeous.
I think Nia Long said it best in the Good Hair Trailer "Lighter means brighter equals better" that's the mentality a lot of people have. I think that's girls shake this mentality quicker than guys because they have to accept themselves whereas a lot of guys project that mentality by dating a lighter person and saying comments like that... It's sad but I think it's true.
thank you for sharing your story. Im thinking of doing a video discussion for the mag.
p.s Jennifer & Natalie I love your style of writing.
* well said
I'm a first timer to your blog, but this really caught my attention. It's so sad that people still think it's ok to say stuff like this.
lol P.S. Thanks! xxo
I definitely hear you Henrietta and this is not the first time I've heard of that EXACT phrase but I don't like Jennifer's comment.
I am on the polar end - extremely light and people often say things to me like "you would look better with a tan" or if the sun is out "go get some you need it" or "are you always this pale?!"
I understand why people say those things but I don't turn around and say "not only brown can get down!"
I think people should focus on the positive when people say negative things. When you say things like "Not everything light, bright & damn near white is gorgeous." I feel like you're almost attacking lighter people. Then you're not solving your problem, you're just feeding a bigger fire.
Things like "you're pretty for a dark skinned girl" or "you would look better with a tan" are under-handed racist comments. Case closed!
Oh by the way me and Andrea did a video on this topic:
