Toronto [does] Love Kicks

Wednesday Nov 17th marked the launch of the newest social initiative aimed to make a difference in the lives of Toronto youths. 291 King St. W was buzzing with sneaker enthusiasts as “Toronto Loves Kicks” (TLK) made its official debut complimented by art, music and fashion throughout the night. Founders Dion Walcott and Lee Joseph presented the night as the stepping stone to work with underprivileged youths of disadvantage neighbourhoods using kicks (sneakers) as the underlying tool to reach out and create social responsibility and youth empowerment.
The inauguration of “TLK” manifested a foundation that was clearly celebrated by the guests in attendance as Dazzling Lounge and Restaurant was the site to a vivacious, urban, and inclusive event. Guests were greeted by friendly faces, given the opportunity to indulge in what can only be described as earnest contemporary urban images conveyed through different paintings lingering over parts of the room. With “TLK” logos, images and sponsored goodies spread around every corner of the venue the underlying message of the night was far from anyone’s mind. The notion of creativity and artistic vision held an overwhelming presence as the festivities unfolded and giving back was the basis for everything that took place.
The memories of the night were captured in photos by the photographers of Deniro Entertainment, and the attendees were awed, aroused, and inspired by the musical styling of Dj Tabs; as he touched every cornerstone of hip-hop and R&B, all the way back to the early 90’s often matching the most fitting music segments with the most suitable sneaker highlights of the night. Silent auctions, special giveaways, and a brief fashion show presenting a collection of classic sneakers and exclusive “TLK” apparel kept the guests immersed in all the excitement and asking for more.
The night was a success in many respects as the gentlemen behind “TLK”  managed to stay true to their vision; they have included elements of their lives in this initiative and these unique expressions are evident in their love for their culture, community and well let’s face it sneakers. As the Toronto sneaker lovers and their supporters were impressed, amazed, challenged, triumphant, and at times even futile in their sneaker knowledge; the one element that remained constant and evident as the night progressed and came to an end was the centrality and the versatility of sneakers, if nothing else in their simplest form as a piece of functional art.

Quote of the Day

Build a future

The more you take action, the more good things you'll have coming your way. You'll come across more and better opportunities, learn more things, and become more skilled at getting the results you want.

Yes, you're going to make mistakes, and you'll regularly need to adjust your approach. But that's no reason to avoid action. In fact, that's a good reason to get started as soon as possible. If you're going to make mistakes, it's better to get out there, get the mistakes over with, and learn from them.

Don't sit around wondering and worrying about what might happen. Use your own actions and your own energy to determine what will happen.

Don't sit around building a list of complaints and regrets. Instead, take real, focused action and build a positive, fulfilling future for yourself.
Figure out what you want to create, where you want to go, what you want to experience, and who you want to become. Then get yourself in action and keep moving in the direction you've chosen.

INFLUENCERS

"INFLUENCERS is a short documentary that explores what it means to be an influencer and how trends and creativity become contagious today in music, fashion and entertainment.

The film attempts to understand the essence of influence, what makes a person influential without taking a statistical or metric approach.

Written and Directed by Paul Rojanathara and Davis Johnson, the film is a Polaroid snapshot of New York influential creatives (advertising, design, fashion and entertainment) who are shaping today's pop culture."

I def want to be an influencer, I think it would be the most rewarding thing

LG Fashion Week - PART ELEVEN (Pink Tartan)

Pink Tartan
Can we say wowie kazowie? If OR brought us to the beach, then Pink Tartan certainly brought
the party. Vibrant, glamourous and colourful –think blazing blues, hot pinks, electric oranges—
Pink Tartan transported the high life of the 70s to 2011. This show is often one of the faves and
every time I sit at a show, I remember why. The collection, an homage to the glitz and glamour
of the 70s, was done with a uniquely modern twist. Kimberly Newport-Mimran (designer) showed
us that fashion can finally get back to being hip and fun with the skyhigh platforms and flirtatious
silhouettes. And if the show wasn’t enough to keep us giddy as schoolgirls, sitting across from
the face of Canadian fashion, Jeanne Beker certainly did. I caught up with Jeannie (who was
extremely gracious) to ask about the show.

Jeanne on PT:
“I loved the show! I thought it was very bold, very vibrant, very modern, colourful and sexy. It had
a bit of 70s vibe going on, but in a very forward way. The kind of stuff that I’d like to throw in my
bag and go to Saint-Tropez with. But also very steamy and romantic, but in a very edgy kind of
way. I loved it!”

Patent: What inspired you while you were creating this collection?

Kim:  I am visual and was inspired by Marisa Berenson from all those great American Vogue shoots from the 70s

Patent: Three words that describe your collection?

Kim: Modern, lux and strong

Patent: What would you patent (copyright)?

Kim: Our quatrefoil signature print

Patent: Best thing about LGFW?

Kim: The excitement of seeing the clothes on a runway

Patent: Fashion and society are very much intertwined. Given the slow comeback from the
global recession, what do you think fashion is trying to say?

Kim: Fashion

Patent: What does the theme 'Power of Style' mean for you?

Kim: I think the  power of style is how clothes can empower the way you feel
