LG Fashion Week - PART FOUR (Rachel Mara)

Rachel Mara

Patent: What inspired this collection?

Mara: Sexy film heroines from the 60s and 70s. Faye Dunaway and Ali McGraw and kinda badass women.

Patent: Three  words that would define your collection.

Mara: Sexy, feminine and sophisticated.

Patent: Fashion and society at large got hit by the global recession pretty hard in the last few years, but now it seems we are slowly on a comeback. Since fashion and society are so closely intertwined, what do you think fashion is trying to say to society right now?

Mara: I think designers are just getting their footing again and feeling confident to put themselves out there. I think the consumer is getting warmed up to the idea of spending again, if it's worth it. I think it needs to stand out and have great value.

Patent: This year's theme being the 'Power of Style', how would you define that?

Mara: A confident woman who can pull off any look she wants.

Patent: If you could patent one thing in your closet, what would it be?

Mara: Wow. I don't know.

Patent: I stumped you? [laughter]

Mara: You did. What would you do?

Patent: Classic black trousers.

Mara: [thinks] A white t-shirt.

LG Fashion Week - PART THREE (Marthe Aime)

Marthe Aime

Brother-sister team Barbara and Stephen Asei-Dantoni made their debut on Canadian soil at this year's fashion week. The Parisian duo tapped into their inner warrior to bring forth a timeless and romantic collection for S/S 11. A show filled with statement accessories, asymmetrical jackets and colours of the rainforest, the pair definitely accomplished their task of designing a well-recieved line.

Patent: What was your inspiration?

Barbara: The Amazon woman. I wanted a woman that was close to nature and the organic elements. At the same time, I had to reflect transportation and the modern woman that lives in the city. So I had to make a connection between these two women and keep it feminine.

Patent: Three  words that would define your collection.

Barbara: Organic. Keen. Timeless.

Patent: Fashion and society have always been intertwined. Given the fact that we're coming back from a global recession, what message is fashion trying to give to society?

Barbara: We are trying to explore new dress codes. The  accessory is becoming really important. Fashion is saying it's time to personalize your clothes, the idea is to find a good outfit and yourself and your personality; not by just putting on the clothes but arranging them to suit you. You can take the clothing further and have the liberty to enjoy.

Stephen: As far as the way we put our show, we try to transmit a different message and way. Enjoy positivity. We don't want sad women. We want women who enjoy life. We want diversity. I think it's time to return to prosperity. It's 2010. It's time to have a different approach to fashion.

Patent: This year's theme being the 'Power of Style', how would you define that?

Stephen: Be yourself. That's the power of style. To have an accessory and have it change what you're wearing and how you looking. Having the option to make it what you want, that's the power right there.

Barbara: I hate when people buy the trend and then get rid of it. Then buy again and get rid of it like kleenex. That's not power, it's consumption. Being timeless that's where the power of style is. Can a women wear this 5, 10, 15 years from now?

Patent: If you could patent one thing, what would it be?

Barbara: [laughter] What a question. I would bottle elegance.

Stephen: Ah oui, elegance.

LG Fashion Week - PART TWO (Chloe comme Parris)

Chloe comme Parris
Spring/Summer 2011

Patent: This being your first time [at LGFW] , what was your inspiration for the collection?

Parris: The jewelry was inspired by modes of transportation and aesthetics that come along with travelling and the clothing was inspired by explorers and the texture of rocks. I handprinted a lot of the fabrics. I'm a textile artist so fabric design is really important to me. But I also use menswear as a starting point to my collection. I was looking at male explorers from the 14-and 1500s for detailing; but I always let my things just be modern. I always just take from the past and bring it forward and just mix-and-match things that I find and research, as well as things that come to me along the way.

Patent: You mentioned menswear, why particularly that genre?

Parris: Basically I've been a tomboy all my life. I wore my brother's bathing suits and all his clothes. I had men's haircuts when I was younger. I'm a tomboy so...I find it refreshing to see women in things that aren't skintight or revealing. There's something about menswear that is so classic that I just wanted to bring it over into womenswear. Women are always changing so much and I feel like I just want to create a new image for women.

Patent: In three words, how would you describe this collection.

Chloe: Cool, effortless, chic.

Patent: This being your first time around, it must be surreal. But other than your show what has been the best thing about fashion week?

Chloe: We haven't had a chance to see anything yet. But that will be it, seeing the shows--what other designers are doing. We really want to see what else is out there and how other people put on a show.  Also working with the Fashion Collective, it's been so fun with them and they have amazing vision.

Patent: Who are you making your clothes for?

Parris: Definitely the effortlessly chic tomboy {laughter]. Someone who appreciates adorning themselves as works of art. But also appreciates subtlety and isn't obvious. Someone who has style and really knows themselves.

Patent: Fashion and society have always been intertwined. Given the fact that we're coming back from a global recession, what message is fashion trying to give to society?

Parris: That less is more. I see many lines coming down the runway with like 80 looks and 20 of them are good. We can edit. We don't have to send all these clothes down the runway. So definitely, less is more. Pick quality over quantity.

Patent: This year's theme being the 'Power of Style', how would you define that?

Chloe: Women are becoming more and more powerful. Men are getting pushed to the back now. I feel that women are showing people that they can handle huge responsibilities. I  just think women are extremely powerful in today's society, I think that's what it's [the theme] trying to say.

Parris: You shouldn't be afraid to show power through style.

Patent: Last question, if you could patent one thing, what would it be?

Parris: An oversized blouse, top, sweatshirt. An oversized garment.

Chloe: This tall bishop ring.

LG Fashion Week - PART ONE (Jules Powers)

We came, we saw, we conquered! Last week, throngs of fashion die-hards flocked to LG's fashion week held in Toronto. The Patent team was in full effect as we previewed over 20 shows and got some face time with the designers. Instead of doing the traditional review, we opted to let the clothes and the designers speak for themselves. So we came up with a set of questions ( pretty much the same for all) and gave them 5 minutes to speak their hearts and minds.

Jules Powers

Patent: Three  words that would define your collection.

Powers: Cool, wearable and colourful.

Patent: What inspired this collection?

Powers: Just on the street, from everybody walking around in the heatwave with their shorts and little skirts. We [also] looked at magazines to get really inspired by fabrics.

Patent: I definitely saw a lot of flirty skirts, the headbands of course. Where you going in a certain direction with that?

Powers: My whole aesthetic is very feminine. But we always want to give it a little bit of an edge. And it's always a little bit sexy, a little bit edgy and then a little bit street.

Patent: Well there's definitely something for everyone.

Powers:Yeah! Well that's the idea. I mean I have customers that are 50 years old and then customers that are 15.

Patent: So with this collection and your fashion in general, what message are you trying to impart to your wearers?

Powers: I'm not really sending a message I'm just giving women an option to buy clothes that are Canadian-made,  well-made, edgy, street and still extremely wearable. They're right on trend and giving women an option that's not H&M and not very expensive designer name that's affordable. A lot of the pieces are under $200 so we like it to be very sensible.

Patent: One thing I thought when looking at the collection was that it was very functional.

Powers: Well I'm a mom with two small toddlers and I wear all these clothes. Everyday is a crazy day so they have to work.

Patent: If there was one thing you could patent what would it be?

Powers: My sweatpants.

Greta Constantine Spring/Summer 2011 Collection & Interview with Patent Mag

The crowd outside of the small branded boutique at 161 Spadina Ave., was vivacious and animated with anticipation as the downtown venue was brought to life with the bust and boom of fashion enthusiasts on the evening of October 17th. The duo behind Greta Constantine, Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong kept the eager group of fashion lovers, buyers, bloggers and everyone in between in awe as they delivered yet another solid collection of simple material and beautiful silhouette, phenomenon detailing and volume using solid and intrinsic tones of slate grey, khaki, and earthy mist greens. While each individual piece held its own merit in the realms of fashion creations, the highlight of the night was Coco Rocha’s appearance as she opened the show with a lustrous, soft, gliding off-white and later Grecian styled piece consistent with what we know and love from Greta Constantine sexy, sophisticated, feminine and powerful. Following the show, Patent Mag had the chance to chat with the pair and later ask Kirk a few questions about the collection, the success behind Greta Constantine and what’s in store for this dynamic fashion duo in the future:

PATENT: You always do magic with your use of simple material and beautiful silhouette; what was your vision behind this particular collection?

KIRK PICKERSGILL: Exploring the power of fashion to enhance the individual. Motivated by how fashion is in itself a sort of superstition, to the effect that it envelopes our lives, shapes our ways of thinking, and is so intrinsically human. Using tones of dove grey, khaki, and moss the collection serves as the uniform for the urban tribe of tomorrow.

PATENT: You’re both fashion veterans recognized in Toronto and in the fashion scene around the world, and it’s a competitive scene. What would you say has been your biggest inspiration this far to keep you grounded and staying true to your vision year after year?

KIRK PICKERSGILL: We're inspired, and always will be, by the women in our lives. Accordingly, it's all about making pieces that will serve to empower. Effortless, timeless, and contemporary- what everyday luxury should feel like.

PATENT: You have dressed a few celebrities before, some big Canadian ones as well; who would be the one celebrity you would love to dress?

KIRK PICKERSGILL:
Emily Blunt and Jessica Pare.

PATENT: You two have such extensive backgrounds in fashion, how do you work together so well and combine your visions to reflect the both of you?

KIRK PICKERSGILL: It's hard to describe; yet somehow it always works out as a symbiotic relationship. Moreover, Stephen and I are just one part of the puzzle as we always benefit from our staff's ideas to enhance the collection. In our studio, even the most bizarre or most obvious of ideas have merit, and can find themselves showing up in the season's collection.

PATENT: I know that Barb Atkin, Holt's vice-president of fashion direction has called you guys a “RETAIL SENSATION”; so what is next for Greta Constantine?

KIRK PICKERSGILL:
Expand from the Canadian market to the international! We want to dress the women of the world, giving them a little piece of what Canadian design has to offer.
Once again the G.C show with all of its allure and simplicity set the bar rather high for what was to follow in the Toronto fashion week. As the unofficial kick off show, Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong presented a successful unrestricted show true to every bit of their fashionably blessed visions. Leaving everyone wondering how the Toronto fashion trendsetters would unfold their visions upon all fashion lovers alike.
